Shelter cats and kittens find happy homes

The Animal Adoption Center of Blount County turned a shelter overpopulation crisis into a banner week for cats, kittens, and families in Blount County and beyond. As cat kennels at the Cleveland facility filled, director Karen Startley launched a 50% off adoption fee event that resulted in new homes for 12 adult cats and 30 kittens.

The 42 feline adoptions of May 24 through June 1 represented an astronomical increase compared to the sole cat adoption of the previous 9-day period. Karen attributed the enthusiasm to the fees, discounted to $42–50, and the related advertising push, as well as to school being out for the summer.

Although it may be tempting to choose a free kitten from the myriad offers on Facebook or from neighbors, families are “most definitely better off adopting from the shelter,” Karen said. All shelter cats and kittens are vaccinated and treated for intestinal parasites and fleas. Adult cats go home after a spay or neuter and rabies shot; kittens go home with a voucher to be used once they reach three months old.

The shelter also offers microchipping for a $10 additional cost. Microchipping can help reconnect owners with lost pets. While collars can get caught or be removed, a microchip is a permanent identification so long as the owner's contact information is kept current.

If you would like to adopt a pet or meet the shelter's cats and dogs, the Animal Adoption Center of Blount County welcomes visitors Tuesday through Friday from 11–4:30 and Saturday from 9–2. The shelter is located at 5554 County Highway 1 in Cleveland and can be reached at 205-625-6026.
