How to Use the Schoolhouse

In the main room near the piano, turn the timer knobs to activate the water line and the HVAC. The thermostat at the top right controls A/C and heat in the main room. The A/C is inefficient and the building is poorly insulated: on hot days, allow well over an hour for the main room to be cooled to the mid-70°s.

If using the second room, enter through the door next to the kitchen — you’ll find the timer and thermostat on your right.

The gas oven and stovetop require activation of the gas line. The yellow handle (on the left side of the photo) is shown in the off position. Turn it clockwise to activate the gas. Be sure to turn off the stovetop, the oven, and the gas line when you’re finished.

To use hot water, first make sure the main water line has been turned on via timer. Then enter the kitchen and look for the closet on the right, next to the sink. To power the water heater, flip the lower left breaker to the left. The direction is not marked, so please note that the left position is on, and right position is off. Be sure the timer controlling the water supply is active the entire time that the hot water is turned on, and that the water heater breaker is shut off, by flipping the switch to the right, when you are finished using it. (Do not alter the position of other breakers.)

To use the cooler shown, flip the switch that Charley is pointing to. (The freezer behind Charley and the refrigerator to the left of the cooler, out of the photo, remain powered.)

See the posted directions for using the tea maker. Please power off and unplug any electrical appliances that are used.

The door to the smoke room is on the left side of the kitchen (at left in the photo above). Inside is an icemaker, shown in the right photo, which is direct-plumbed, so ice is always available (regardless of whether the water timer is on). A fan near the ceiling is set to automatically activate on hot days; no adjustment is needed. When leaving the smoke room, ensure that the inner (wood) door is fully closed (latched).

These are the guidelines posted in the building. In summer 2022, the trash policy was that a small amount of non-food waste could be left in the trashcans. Full trashbags or any food waste must be disposed of in the dumpster (shown below), and the bag replaced. If your event generates multiple bags of trash, you are responsible for disposal.

Charley Head, Ken McIntyre, and Mickey Dooley showed me around the Schoolhouse to point out the important notes for its operation. Charley confirmed the accuracy of the content posted here, and Ellen Hallman clarified the updated trash policy.
